Employee spotlight: Sarah Burke, Content Design team

Fertility health journeys can be complex. At Carrot, we want to make it as straightforward as possible for members to access accurate information and understand how to take their next step. That’s where our Content Design team comes in.

Content Designer Sarah Burke ensures that product content for our members is useful and easy to understand. Whether she's writing about adoption or deductibles, she recognizes the challenges members are facing, the biggest questions they have, and what’s most important for them to know.

We sat down with Sarah to learn a bit more about her experiences, her favorite parts of working at Carrot, and how she uses her Carrot benefits. If you’re looking to join our creative, passionate team, we’re hiring.

Name: Sarah Burke (she/her)

Role: Content Designer

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

When did you join Carrot?

I started in September 2021.

What is your team’s role?

Carrot’s Content Design team designs member-facing experiences using words, giving members the information they need when and how they need it. We help to conceptualize and advocate for highly visible features like Carrot Plans and group sessions, but we also develop and improve microcopy, educational articles, direct communications, and help content. In all cases, we make strategic decisions based on research, business goals, and user experience (UX) best practices. We collaborate closely with product designers and product managers, as well as teammates across the company.

What is the best thing about your job?

The best part about my job is that I learn something new every day. A big part of my role in content design is making the complex clear, so it’s great to be surrounded by helpful, smart, talented colleagues who understand complex topics inside and out. This job is the perfect fit for my natural curiosity and tendency to ask way too many questions.

Why did you join Carrot?

Most importantly, Carrot’s mission is close to my heart. My daughter, Fiona, was born through IVF after more than four years of fertility challenges. My spouse and I had to pay for treatment entirely out of pocket, creating additional stress during an already painful time. Having a Carrot benefit would have made a huge difference to my family, and I want others to have access to this amazing resource when they need it most.

Carrot has also given me the opportunity to take my career in a different direction. This is my first job in tech after almost a decade in the nonprofit sector. I love being able to apply my skills to this meaningful new challenge, and joining such a mission-driven company made the transition easier. People come to Carrot from a wide range of backgrounds, so I felt welcomed and valued from day one.

What is your favorite perk about working at Carrot?

When it comes to perks, it’s hard to choose just one. I love our Modern Health benefit, which gives us all virtual coaching and therapy. My runner-up would be our monthly Compt stipend, which we are encouraged to spend on whatever makes us feel happy and productive at work. I didn’t even know a benefit like that existed.

How would you describe Carrot’s culture?

The culture here is collaborative, supportive, transparent, and inclusive. It’s clear that the company is always looking for new ways to improve and become even better.

What do you appreciate the most about working at Carrot?

Our remote workforce is seen as a strength. It’s awesome to work with people all over the world, and I love the variety of perspectives and lived experiences my coworkers bring to the table. The company does a great job keeping us connected and engaged.
